Mapbox Live Tracking Clusters

Hello, I use the plugin to display the locations of our vehicle fleet on a map which works great. I notice that markers have started being added and removed based on the conditions you set for “live tracking” data which is a great improvement. I’d now like to show live tracking markers as clusters when they overlap as it can be hard to notice I have 2 vehicles in the same place. Is this something that’s possible? Thanks, Jack

Hello J4CKG,

Thank you for your inquiry. You can definitely group markers into clusters using the “Create cluster” workflow action, as outlined in the documentation here.

You can also access exposed states such as “Created Cluster ID” and “Clicked Cluster Data” to track various data related to your clusters. To provide more tailored assistance, please share additional details about your goal—for example, what specific actions or data tracking you would like to perform with the clusters. We’ll be happy to take a closer look at your request and guide you further.

Hello @J4CKG ,

We’re following up on your request to show live tracking markers as clusters when they overlap using the Mapbox plugin. We previously shared that the “Create cluster” workflow action can achieve this, with exposed states like “Created Cluster ID” and “Clicked Cluster Data” available for tracking, as noted in our documentation.

To provide more tailored guidance, we’d appreciate it if you could share additional details about your goals—such as specific actions or data tracking you’d like to implement with the clusters. This will help us assist you more effectively, especially considering the forum discussions on clustering configurations.

Please let us know this information at your earliest convenience.

Hi @egor.smorodinov,

Thank you for your responses. I was hoping for some sort of compatability with the live tracking and clusters. I use the plugin to show a wall chart of the locations of all my vehicles. I frequently have more than 1 vehicle at a location and was hoping of replacing the overlapped markers that would normally be present and show some sort of dynamic marker to indicate a ‘cluster’ or more than 1 vehicle present. I’d like these auto created when vehicles are within a given range of each other and then them to seperate and go back to normal if the vehicles should move apart. Is there any functionality in the plugin that may be able to help with this?

Thanks,
Jack

Hey @J4CKG,

Thanks for your detailed questions and for sharing how you’re using the Mapbox Maps plugin for live vehicle tracking. Glad to hear the live marker updates are working well for you!

To answer your question about clustering: the plugin does support marker clustering, but only when you use static markers. When the “Cluster Markers” option is enabled, markers that are close to each other are grouped together, making it much easier to spot locations with multiple vehicles. However, this clustering feature currently isn’t compatible with live or real-time tracking markers—so if your vehicles are moving and you’re updating their locations live, the plugin won’t group those markers into clusters. Instead, each will show individually.

If you want to show clusters for a “snapshot” view of your fleet, you can set up your map with static markers and enable clustering. For live tracking, each vehicle will appear as its own marker.

As a workaround, you could set up a repetitive workflow that triggers every couple of minutes using Bubble’s “Do every X seconds” event (see Bubble Manual). This would re-render the map with updated marker positions and clusters. While it won’t display the exact real-time location, it does give a decent overview of where your vehicles are. Just keep in mind this approach can use a lot of workload units and could quickly eat up your allotted Mapbox API calls.

Hope this clarifies things!

Hey @J4CKG,

Just checking in to see if my last message helped clarify things for you regarding clustering and live tracking in the Mapbox Maps plugin.

As a quick recap: the plugin does support marker clustering, but only when you’re using static markers. When clustering is enabled, it groups nearby markers together—helpful for spotting areas with multiple vehicles or dense activity. However, this feature doesn’t currently work with live or real-time tracking markers, so if your vehicles are moving and updating in real time, each one will continue to appear individually on the map.

It sounds like your live marker updates are already working well, which is great to hear. If you’re ever looking to show a high-level view of your fleet at a given moment, clustering with static markers could still be useful in certain views of your app.

Let me know if you have any follow-up questions, or if there’s anything else I can help clarify!
