Hi team!

We are seeing very long loading times, to play back large video files, that are stored on an AWS S3 buckets - the video files are of interviews (one hour - two hours long) and very large in size.

Is there a way to optimize the loading time?

For large video files, especially those that are several hours long, it’s not uncommon to experience long loading times. Here are a few strategies you can implement to optimize the loading time:

  1. Ensure that your video files are encoded in a web-friendly format like H.264 or H.265, which provides high quality at lower file sizes. Additionally, consider compressing your videos to reduce their size without significantly impacting quality.

  2. If you are not already using AWS CloudFront in conjunction with S3, consider setting it up. CloudFront is AWS’s content delivery network that works seamlessly with S3 and can greatly improve content delivery speeds.

  3. If possible, offer lower-resolution versions of your largest videos for users.
